Is this your computer? C'mon, you know it is.
If your computer is running slowly and driving you insane, here are 10 ways to get it moving quickly again. Please share your own suggestions and frustrations in the comments below.
And please subscribe to our blog for more free articles on making your computer faster!
1. Get more RAM
RAM = Random Access Memory. Getting more RAM is like increasing the number of lanes on a highway; it speeds up traffic not by making the speed limit higher, but rather by giving everyone more room to maneuver. Which would you rather have, two lanes or eight?
Watch a YouTube video on how to install some extra RAM and give your computer a much-needed speed boost. It’s easy.
2. Use less RAM
Take a close look at the programs and processes you’re running on your desktop or laptop computer. Do you need all of them to be running right now? Probably not.
This tip especially applies to startup and shutdown times. If you’d prefer not to have to take a nap while waiting for your PC or Mac to start up or shut down, please check out this Yahoo! Answers article.
3. Delete Stuff
We could go on and on about this point, and how you really ought to just get rid of those endless reams of snorkeling photos and Neil Armstrong moonwalking videos to free up hard disk space, and how your computer’s hard disk is probably crammed with all kinds of … but we won’t.
Instead, two words: CCleaner. (And no, C does not stand for Computer.)
If you’ve found something as good or better than CCleaner to free up disk space, we’d love to hear it below in the comments.
4. Defrag
De-what? Frag.
5. De-Spy
Okay, we’re off the “de-” thing. Get rid of spyware and adware; they slow things down because they’re looking through your computer while you’re not looking. ConsumerSearch has good advice on where to find the best anti-spyware software. For anti-adware, it’s hard to beat the free alternative by Lavasoft called Ad-Aware.
6. Do Some Speed Reading
That’s right, read for speed! I’ve always loved Annoyances.org for performance hacks. The folks over at a little company called Microsoft also have some good ideas on speeding up computers.
7. Get a Bigger Monitor
I know, I know – a monitor is not a computer (unless you’ve got an iMac, I guess). But seriously – one of the very best things I’ve ever done to work faster on a computer is to hook myself up with an extra few inches of screenery. The move from a 15-inch monitor to a 19-inch monitor was like, the best thing ever for me.
8. Skip #8 and #9
Okay, don’t. But do learn and use shortcuts. You will never be able to get a minute of life back when you’re about to fly to the great gig in the sky someday, but you can save a split-second here and there a few thousand times over right now, by hitting Ctrl-X for cut, Ctrl-C for copy, Ctrl-V for paste, etc. Saves your poor arm tendons, too, from excessive clickage.
Gracias, Wikipedia.
9. Actually, Do Skip #9
Okay, really – don’t.
You see how hard that was?
What I’m trying to say is, take a minute when you sit down at your computer to think about what it is you actually want to accomplish. Make a quick list and git ‘er done. That way, when you’re getting distracted on some random company blog and deciding whether to skip or not skip #9 in a list of 10 useful tips on how to do computer stuff more efficiently, you won’t have to vacillate.
Here’s some more food for thought on this point.

We’re biased of course, but we think Clickety-Split’s free software is a great way to make your computing experience a faster one.
Clickety-Split doesn’t make your computer run faster, but it helps you go where you want to go faster, so I’m including it on this list. Oh – did I mention that we pay you for using it?

But Enough About Us … What About You?
